Winters on the way!!!

I hope everyone had a nice Halloween!!

There's a definite chill in the air and we even had snow this week!! I can't believe how quickly its come around, but I'm sure i say that every year. My friend has already put his gorgeous Tegu's into brumation for the winter, this is similar to hibernation in other animals, but it differs in the metabolic processes involved. This year we have decided not to brumate any of our snakes (most are a bit young) so we will keep their temps up and continue feeding them up over the winter , ready for breeding the adults in the spring.
Thankfully the reptiles don't seem to suffer as badly as the poor dogs do at this time of year, from all the fireworks going off every evening. They whine at all the noises and tend to hide away. I wouldn't think of taking them out in the evening at this time of year, i think they would be too scared. The poor things don't understand that all those loud bangs are supposed to be fun, defiantly not fun for my poor doggies.
If anyone is going to a fireworks display, i hope you have a good time and stay safe.
Until the next time,
H xx

it was a little chilly here, but this week it's supposed to be in the 70s...kind of odd for november.

They have fireworks for Halloween? I am so glad they don't do that here. It was a beautiful day yesterday. I went to the orchard and bought some apples and cider. Now I have to make some apple crisp.

We had snow flurries here in NJ this week too!

When I had toads, they would naturally try to hibernate, even though they were inside.

Yep... sure is gittin chilly out there! We need to prepare our animals for winter, for sure! We let Sugar's coat grow longer in the winter.

Been cold here too the last few days. You must be really committed to the care of your reptiles judging by your blog. My cats hate it on bonfire night, we have to lock the cat flaps and give them a litter tray.

I really am not ready for winter. Sometimes I think I am part reptile--not made to be active in the cold :(

I'm a tad confused about the fireworks myself... :)

It's cool here today, but it's supposed to be 75 by mid-week and then snow by Friday. That's Chicago for you!

Hmm .. snow and fireworks?

Are you based in the UK?

I love the cold. Which is strange considering I live in florida

Our cats won't even go outside if they hear fireworks, but our poopy dog loves to hear them and wants to go see what's happening.

Snow? Wow! I'd love to see some of that. It's been cool here, but not cold. Just cool enough for a light jacket...

Do your reptiles react to the changing daylight hours?

Hellan said...

yes here in the UK we seem to have fireworks from mid october to january, some stores wont sell them until nov 4th but most do, so were in for a few weeks of it. The reptiles do adjust themselves to having less daylight so for some we provide artifical uv lighting. Thanks for all the comments everyone xx

Even we (in central Florida) had two frost in a row this past week, which was awfully early - and my banana trees leaves froze... :(
My puppy doesn't like the fireworks either but thankfully - we don't have those around Halloween.

It is only 52 degrees here this morning. That's HALF the temp it was just 30 days ago.

It's been a little chilly but then got back to the old heat again. It is really crazy to go from 80's to 40's back up to 80's again.

We wish it would get a little chillier here in Florida! It's going to be 80 tomorrow! We don't like the fireworks either. We hide under the bed!

we don't have fireworks for Halloween in the UK , we have what we call bonfire night on the 5th of November it is all to do with a guy called Guy Fawkes who along with a few other men plotted to blow up the houses of parliament , he was hung drawn and quartered for treason if my memory serves me well . so each year we have a tradition where we build bonfires and place on top an effigy of Guy and set of fireworks

No real winter around here but the temperatures get low enough for me to put lots of "extra insulation" on... ;)

Yes I hate the long nights in the winter months. Roll on spring, sometimes I wish I could hibernate for the winter!

I'm glad we don't have fireworks around here in October- unfortunately many people leave their dogs in the back yards. July 4th is the biggest day of the year for runaways. The shelters are full- just keep them inside!
